How do adolescents value human and non-human interests? To speak to this, we are designing studies that examine how teenagers make moral tradeoffs between helping humans, animals, plants, and even robots.

From food choices to environmental ethics, dilemmas like these emerge frequently in the world around us. Understanding how young people’s moral priorities shift as they grow older can reveal what drives their decision-making processes and sense of responsibility towards different entities - whether human or non-human.

Data collection with adolescent participants will begin in 2026.
